about

This year I acquired a long out-of-print book from 1969 . . . a book of songs written by Shel Silverstein. Browsing through the 100+ songs in there, I came across one called ‘A Year Without Summer’ . . . an unrelenting tale of an utterly tragic and horrible year. Now, I am and have always been a rather optimistic person, always looking for the silver linings in any bad situation. Despite all the challenges of this year, and without wanting to diminish anyone’s hardships, I have been able to find plenty of good amidst the turbulence. However, I do believe at a certain point it is essential to call something what it is . . . and there is no getting around the fact that for so many people, in so many ways, 2020 has been a steaming pile of shite. A year without summer. I found myself astonished that this forgotten song from 1969 could become my perfect anthem for the year, some 51 years later. Thank heavens for music, and all the arts for that matter . . . these endless gifts helping us humans process our woes and transform them into beauty.

lyrics

This has been
A year without summer
A year with laughter
A year without you
A year shook by winter winds
A year of December
A year to remember
The summers we knew

This has been
A year of the killing frost
A year of the wandering lost
A year of pain
A year of summer rain

Stand at that window
With no one beside you
Walk through dark mirrors
Down streets of fear

Feel the seed of despair
Grow as weeds high inside you
Blooming in darkness
Nourished by tears

This has been
A year of the locusts
Whirling their wings inside mind
And eating my soul
Leaving my fields bare
Darkening my summer air

And here I stand
On the edge of nowhere
With nowhere to go
In the summer snow
