The American composer elaborates on the second single: “There is a very satisfying rhythm to play on the piano, described in musical language as ‘3 against 2’. Philip Glass is responsible for popularising this rhythmic pattern. But he doesn’t own it! All musicians should feel free to employ it. In ‘Pulling the Rain’ I introduce this polyrhythm about halfway through the piece, transitioning from a straight rhythm into the syncopated one. Sometimes it’s difficult to come up with a title for an instrumental piece of music… but this one was easy. I’ve always liked to imagine summoning an epic downpour of rain as this song progresses.”
